If They Don’t Win It’s a Shame exposes American culture and society within the confines of its national pastime. In 1954, at the zenith of America’s postwar society, historian Jacquez Barzun wrote, "whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball.” Today, albeit for different reasons, Major League Baseball remains a microcosm of the country—it’s a dying sport, with a dwindling fan base and myriad of problems that won’t be solved so long as it is beholden to the profit-making interests of owners and advertisers, at the expense of fans like myself.

These photographs are my endeavor to lay bare the heart and mind of America.
